The Lithuanian government on Wednesday approved 35 million euros for the Czech-led multinational initiative to procure and send ammunition to Ukraine.
The funds were allocated from state borrowing for the Defence Ministry’s expenses related to participation in international assistance initiatives for Ukraine, the government said in a press release.
According to Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė, Ukraine has the will and ability to defend itself, “but faces a significant shortage of ammunition, which is why this initiative is much needed”.
“Lithuania, which supports all formats of assistance to Ukraine, will contribute to this as well, so that Ukraine can effectively defend itself against Russian aggression,” she said in the press release.
Under the initiative, countries participate in the joint procurement and transfer of ammunition to Ukraine, identifying potential ammunition stocks or sources of rapid production for acquisition, according to the government.
Lithuania confirmed its participation in the initiative in early March.
