The body of a child was spotted after a fire broke out in an apartment building in Viršuliškės district of Vilnius on Tuesday, the Fire and Rescue Department (PAGD) confirmed. This is the second body found at the scene.

“At 4:17, during the external inspection, the body, possibly of a child, was spotted,” Vida Šmigelskienė, a representative of PAGD, told BNS.

The body was spotted through a window on the fourth floor of the building, according to PAGD deputy head Mindaugas Kanapickas.

“This is the second body [found at the scene]. Yesterday at 15:07, the body of one person was spotted, and at 4:17 at night, the second body was spotted,” he told LRT RADIO.

There is no further information about the victims of the fire at the moment.

The fire, which broke out at around 11:00 on Tuesday after an explosion in an apartment building, was localised on Wednesday morning, Šmigelskienė said.

“At 7:12, the fire was declared extinguished, and the firefighters are continuing with their final work,” she added.

According to Kanapickas, the firefighters are currently deciding how to reinforce the load-bearing structures of the building to prevent it from collapsing.

On Tuesday evening, the Vilnius City municipality declared an emergency in the apartment building in Viršuliškės where the fire broke out.

According to the municipality, 57 residents of the building were registered at the time of the fire, and 18 people, including two children, were temporarily accommodated in a hotel. The rest of the residents decided to stay with relatives. Five people needed medical assistance.
