Vilnius prosecutor has asked the court to impose fines on two Hungarian citizens for desecrating the Ukrainian flag.

According to the case file, on the evening of October 15, two Hungarian citizens removed the Ukrainian flag from the facade of a building on Didžioji Street in Vilnius, placed it in a trash bin, and spat on it, the Prosecutor General’s Office said in a press release on Thursday.

The Hungarians, aged 26 and 36 years, were detained after passers-by reported the incident to the police. They were drunk at the time of the incident.

The investigation revealed that the men had come to Lithuania to watch a match between the Lithuanian and Hungarian national football teams.

According to the prosecutors, the Hungarians could not explain why they desecrated the Ukrainian flag.

Given that the men “admitted their guilt and expressed sincere remorse”, the prosecutor of the Vilnius District Prosecutor’s Office asked the Vilnius City District Court to conclude the case “through a penal order”.

The court is asked to find the Hungarians guilty of desecrating a foreign state’s flag and impose fines on them, according to the press release.
