Belarus has stepped up controls at its border with Lithuania, subjecting travellers to a very thorough screening process, German broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW) reported on Tuesday.
The Belarusian KGB said that terrorist attacks were prevented in Russia and some post-Soviet countries on the eve of Victory Day on May 9. Border controls had been reinforced a few days earlier.
Buses travelling from Lithuania to Belarus are delayed for several hours due to additional inspections. Passengers are instructed to unlock their phones and computers and asked why they had been issued visas.
According to DW, which spoke to several people who have experienced such checks, Belarusian officials are studying in detail the contents of the phones and wallets of people crossing the border.
The Belarusian special services say that stricter border controls are necessary to ensure national security.
