New EU sanctions on Russia won’t be big – Lithuanian FM

The European Union’s planned 11th package of sanctions against Russia will not include any of the major restrictions on businesses proposed by Lithuania, Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said on Tuesday.

Talks on the EU’s fresh restrictions on Russia are starting this week.

“It probably has to be admitted that this is not a big package of sanctions because it does not contain any substantial new measures or businesses, or areas that we have proposed,” Landsbergis told LRT RADIO on Tuesday.

“This means that no consensus has been found on this,” he added.

Lithuania is seeking EU sanctions against Russia’s nuclear giant Rosatom.

Landsbergis has said earlier that Vilnius suggested splitting these sanctions into seven parts and making separate decisions on each of them.

According to the minister, the latest package focuses on sanctions’ circumvention.

“The emphasis in this sanctions package is primarily on circumvention. [...] This package also provides a legal basis for sanctioning or including in sanctions companies that are not directly linked to Russia but demonstrably help to circumvent those sanctions,” he said.
