Estonia mulls giving 16-year-olds the vote

Estonia’s new ruling coalition is considering giving 16-year-olds the right to vote in national elections, the country’s public broadcaster ERR News reports.

Estonia already lowered the voting age to 16 at local elections in 2015. According to data published by the broadcaster, some 26,000 people aged 16 and 17 voted in the 2021 local government elections.

The coalition made up of the Reform Party, Eesti 200 and Social Democrats plan to seek support for the move. However, this would involve constitutional amendments, which may be a lengthy process.
