Conservatives, Freedom Party agree on coalition, work programme in Vilnius

updated

The conservative Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD) and the liberal Freedom Party have agreed on a coalition in the City Council of Vilnius and signed a coalition agreement on Monday.

“We will have a majority of 19 members from the TS-LKD political group and nine from the Freedom Party political group in the City Council in Vilnius, and the political leadership will consist of four vice-mayors,” said Vilnius Mayor-elect Valdas Benkunskas said.

According to the coalition’s work programme, obtained by LRT.lt, the partners have set 12 objectives. It was also agreed that TS-LKD and the Freedom Party would each nominate two deputy mayors.

The administration will be headed by conservative Adomas Bužinskas, Vilnius mayor-elect confirmed.

Benkunskas said last month that three parties – TS-LKD, the Freedom Party and the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP) – could form the core of the ruling coalition in the capital, but the latter rejected the proposal.

The Vilnius City Branch of LSDP in late March cited ideological differences between the Social Democrats and the parties of the ruling axis, as well as the need for an alternative political force in the capital as reasons for the decision.

TS-LKD holds 19 out of 51 seats in the Vilnius City Council. The Freedom Party has nine seats, and the Social Democrats have four.

Vilnius City Council coalition’s work programme:

1) To balance mobility policy in Vilnius and improve accessibility on foot and by different modes of transport.

2) To develop mature, academically and emotionally literate, civic-minded individuals.

3) To ensure the successful integration and human rights of every Vilnius resident.

4) To increase the accessibility and quality of health care services.

5) To ensure sustainable urban development.

6) To develop facilities and services of strategic importance to enhance Vilnius’ competitiveness in the region.

7) To provide direction and clear regulation for the development of the night-time economy.

8) To enhance the cultural attractiveness of Vilnius for residents and visitors.

9) To become a net zero climate impact city by 2030.

10) To maintain a healthy balance between the needs of the city and the preservation of nature.

11) To apply modern and inclusive urban management practices.

12) To ensure that citizens feel safe and informed.
