Lithuania has three-quarters of the capabilities needed for a division and plans to soon acquire more military equipment for the formation of such a military unit, the Armed Forces said on Monday.
The capabilities Lithuania plans to acquire include HIMARS missile systems, Ceasar long-range self-propelled wheeled howitzers, IFVs, as well as reconnaissance and combat drones.
There are also plans to develop tank, reconnaissance, engineering, and artillery battalions. Additional support, including combat aviation, air defence, and additional artillery capabilities, would be coordinated with allies.
“Taking its possibilities into account, the Lithuanian Armed Forces aim to have a light-medium national division capable of full-spectrum operations individually and in conjunction with NATO allies,” the statement reads, adding that the division would consist of 17,000-18,000 troops.
Defence Minister Arvydas Anušauskas announced plans to create a division based on the Land Force in early March, adding that it would be a “ten-year project”.
A division is a military unit consisting of several brigades.
