Lithuania starts issuing electronic gun permits

Lithuania is to start issuing electronic gun permits as new amendments to the Law on Control of Weapons and Ammunition will enter into force on Saturday, allowing people to get electronic permits to possess or carry weapons and also get security guard certificates.

The permits and certificates will be issued to individuals who have submitted the necessary documents and the data will be entered into the Police Licensed Activity Information System, the Police Department said.

“Therefore, there will be no need to waste time for collecting the document. Also, there will be no need to carry the issued document with you,” the police said.

Moreover, holders of paper gun permits and security guard certificates will no longer be required to carry them. When transporting or carrying weapons, people will be required to have an ID and the weapon’s certificate.

Around 100,000 people in Lithuania have a gun permit.

A person aged over 21 or 23 can purchase firearms for self-defence, depending on the category of the gun. The person must have no convictions, meet health requirements, and have proper gun storage conditions.
