Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai (Lithuanian Railways, LTG) said on Friday that it has asked prosecutors to investigate possible attempts by businesses to get around EU sanctions.

LTG said that its staff responsible for supervising the implementation of the sanctions suspect that schemes are being created to circumvent controls and transport products from a sanctioned factory in Belarus.

Earlier this month, such suspicions led to the suspension of certain shipments, LTG said, adding that information was passed on to the Vilnius Regional Prosecutor's Office.

Earlier this week, activists and journalists blocked two trucks carrying products of Grodno Azot, a company subject to EU sanctions, after they had been cleared by Lithuanian customs officials at a border checkpoint.

The protesters say that Grodno Azot's fertilisers are also transported by rail. They suspect that a new company has been established to bypass the sanctions, because nitrogen fertilisers are not on the list of sanctioned goods.
