‘Every howitzer saves lives’: Arestovych on Lithuania’s decision not to give weapons to Ukraine

Lithuania is one of the most generous supporters of Ukraine and it might still find ways to hand howitzers over to the war-ravaged country, Oleksiy Arestovych, an adviser to the Ukrainian president’s office, has said.

On Monday, Lithuania's State Defence Council decided not to hand NASAMS air defence systems and the PzH 2000 howitzers to Ukraine, instead opting to support the country with ammunition.

Commenting on the country’s decision, Arestovych stresses that “the most important thing is a common policy direction”.

“Is it difficult and we continue to look for solutions, or is it difficult and we don’t give any more support?” Arestovych told LRT RADIO on Tuesday. “We know very well that Lithuania has been looking for solutions since the beginning of the war. I think that in the long run, it will find ways to hand over both the howitzers and NASAMS [to Ukraine].”

He also stressed that Lithuania is among the most generous countries in terms of its support to Ukraine.

“It is difficult to find a closer ally of Ukraine than Lithuania. Sometimes it seems to me that Lithuania has given us three military budgets,” Arestovych said.

“It is clear to me from talking to Lithuanian experts that there is determination. And every howitzer is saving lives,” he added.
