Lithuania is on Friday officially closing the Medininkai Foreigners’ Registration Centre in the district of Vilnius.
Interior Minister Agnė Bilotaitė is visiting Medininkai, a village close to Lithuania's border with Belarus, on the occasion.
According to the minister, the facility had to be urgently set up on the grounds of a border guard school in Medininkai in September 2021, which required a great deal of mobilisation and effort by the authorities and non-governmental organisations.
The Medininkai facility housed 900 people at the peak of the migration crisis.
The last irregular migrants were moved from the facility to other migrant centres in Pabradė and Kybartai in mid-August.
Modular housing units in Medininkai have been dismantled and removed from the grounds of the border guard school.
The camps were set up last year to accommodate an inflow of irregular migrants coming from Belarus.
Over 4,200 people, mostly from the Middle East and Africa, crossed into Lithuania from Belarus last year.
