International community should take example from Iceland, Lithuanian president says in Reykjavik

Iceland, the first country to recognise Lithuania’s independence in 1991, should serve as an inspiration for the international community to support those fighting for their freedom, President Gitanas Nausėda said as he started his official visit to Reykjavik on Friday.

“What Iceland did for Lithuania in 1991 continues to inspire the international community today,” the Lithuanian president said in a press release. “This is a great example of how even a small country can support a nation yearning for freedom and become the forerunner of a process that will determine its future.”

“The example of Iceland today inspires Lithuanians to wholeheartedly support Ukraine and other countries fighting for their freedom,” he added.

President Nausėda, together with his Icelandic, Latvian and Estonian counterparts, took part in a ceremony in Reykjavik marking the 31st anniversary of the restoration of diplomatic relations.

Speaking at the ceremony, Nausėda said that Iceland held a special place in the hearts of all Lithuanians and that Lithuania still felt grateful for the Nordic nation’s leadership in recognising its independence.

In the more than 30 years since the re-establishment of their diplomatic ties, Iceland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia have become reliable allies and partners, committed to working together to strengthen democracy and defend common values, according to the president.
