‘Critical shortage’ of accommodation for Ukrainian refugees in Lithuania – NGO

BNS 2022.06.17 16:49

There are not enough places to accommodate Ukrainian refugees who remain in Lithuania, the non-governmental organisation Stiprūs Kartu (Strong Together) warned on Friday.

Many hosts who offered accommodation to Ukrainians entered into three-month lease agreements which have expired by now, the NGO says, adding that it’s becoming almost impossible to find an apartment for Ukrainian refugees.

“With the sharp drop in housing supply and skyrocketing rent prices, finding a place to live on your own is becoming a huge challenge,” Edmundas Jakilaitis, journalist and one of the founders of Strong Together, said in a statement.

The Lithuanian government has decided to offer compensations for property owners who accommodate Ukrainians. Initially, the compensations were to be paid for three months, but have been extended for three more months, Jakilaitis noted.

The total number of Ukrainians who have arrived in Lithuania to seek refuge from the ongoing war stands at 56,000, according to official data. However, the actual number may differ, since some may have already returned home or have not registered with Lithuanian authorities.
