The war in Ukraine has reminded Lithuanians of the need to take precautions in case they need to flee their homes because of some natural or man-made disaster.

The Interior Ministry and the Fire and Rescue Department have launched a campaign entitled Knowledge Saves, raising awareness about civil protection and preparing for extreme situations.

In the event of a natural disaster or any other extreme situation, people will be warned with sirens and phone messages. More information will be given on LRT RADIO and LRT TV.

The Interior Ministry and the Fire and Rescue Department have also issued advice for people to have an emergency bag prepared in case they need to flee. Food, water, and other basic provisions in the bag should cover three days of needs.

Every emergency bag should contain:

– at least three litres of water per person per day

– easy to make food, dry snacks

– compact tourist cooker and a gas canister

– toiletries

– portable radio

– flashlight

– ID documents

– several hundred euros in cash

– warm clothes

– sleeping bag and mat

– cigarettes or jewellery for exchange (recommended)

Most people already have some two-thirds of the essentials at home, says Donatas Gurevičius, head of the Civil Protection Division of the Vilnius Fire and Rescue Board. The emergency bag should be inspected and refilled twice a year.
