Lithuanian FM: Putin must go, but West will not interfere

Russian President Vladimir Putin should not remain in power, but the West has no plans to remove him, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said on Tuesday.

"I agree with and support the American president's position in this respect," Landsbergis told reporters. "Putin should not remain in power."

"Western countries are not planning any interventions," he added.

US President Joe Biden last weekend called Putin a "butcher" and said, "this man cannot stay in power".

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken later tried to play down the statement by stressing that Washington is not seeking to overthrow the Russian leader, although it strongly condemns Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

French and German leaders have reacted to Biden's remark, warning against escalating the situation and stressing that regime change in Russia is not a NATO objective.

The Kremlin has called the US leaders' statements "alarming".

According to Landsbergis, Ukraine is doing most of the work "to replace Putin" by fiercely fighting the Russian invasion.
