On Friday, a rare sight was recorded in Vilnius when the lightning struck the TV Tower.

Kristina Bilniūnaitė, a Vilnius resident, shared a video capturing the spectacle on Facebook.

Thunderstorms and lightning are not frequent, but possible in winter, according to Gytis Valaika, a representative of the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service (LHMT).

“In winter, isolated thunderstorms occur in the western part of Lithuania, near the sea, but they can also occur elsewhere,” Valaika said.

“This time, a contrasting cold front was passing, so there was more lightning in Vilnius,” he added.

On Friday, Lithuania’s Fire and Rescue Department received around 250 calls as a result of extremely strong winds that toppled trees, yachts, lampposts, and traffic lights.

According to meteorologists, strong winds will continue in Lithuania at the beginning of this week as well.
