A new organisation, Mothers of LGBTQ+ Children, is planning to put its weight behind campaigns to advance gay-friendly policies and same-sex partnership.

The NGO was introduced to the public last week by its founders, Rasa Račienė and Jolanta Vaitekūnienė, both parents to LGBTQ+ people, as well as Lina Plieniūtė who is an aunt of an LGBTQ+ person.

According to Plieniūtė, the organisation will work to change attitudes in the Lithuanian society and help people become more tolerant.

“Our goal is to show to Lithuanians in a peaceful and polite way that all people deserve equal rights,” another founder, Račienė, said.

The founders invite all mothers, fathers, grandparents, and relatives of LGBTQ+ children to join the organisation and help its mission.

“We are not supported by any political force. We will be an open organisation […]. We will accept the support of anyone willing to help us,” Plieniūtė said.

“We will engage in educational activities aimed at helping the Lithuanian population to find accurate, scientifically-based information about LGBT people and to avoid misconceptions,” she added.

Last week, Račienė met with President Gitanas Nausėda, who has expressed support for “traditional family values”, to discuss LGBTQ+ rights in Lithuania.
