BNS 2020.12.07 09:59

Lithuania's outgoing Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius will call on his EU counterparts during the Foreign Council meeting in Brussels on Monday to step up the introduction of new sanctions against the Belarusian regime.

"The process on the third sanction package is ongoing and we want to step it up. It will contain additional names and also companies that were not in it before," Linkevičius told BNS.

The new sanction package is now being reviewed but the process should not take too long, according to Linkevičius.

"The countries are working and we are among the initiators. The process is likely to be completed soon," the foreign minister said.

The meeting agenda also includes the issue of transatlantic relations, and the ministers will share their insights into the priorities of EU–US cooperation.

"We will speak about transatlantic relations, which is important now, especially as the new US administration is coming," Linkevičius said.

The foreign ministers will also discuss the post-election situation in Georgia, the election in Venezuela, as well as issues related to human rights, EU’s strategic autonomy, Turkey, and Hong Kong.
