Estonian police have called off a search for two bears, a mother and her cub, after they were spotted wandering on the outskirts of the country’s capital, Tallinn.

They had probably moved on elsewhere, the Estonian authorities said.

"No further signs of the bears were found in the morning, which suggests that they have moved on," according to Estonia's Rescue Board quoted by the country's public broadcaster ERR.

The search stretched over 12 hours and involved drones, dogs, and thermal cameras. Officers were drawn from the police, the border guards, as well as Estonia's rescue department.

Brown bears are native to Estonia and have also recently been spotted in Latvia and Lithuania.
