Lithuania is marking 100 days until it takes over the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union, with 350 official events and five high-level parliamentary meetings planned during its six-month term.
Lithuania will hold the presidency from January 1 through June 30, 2027, marking the second time the Baltic country has assumed the role. It previously held the rotating presidency in 2013.
The Seimas, Lithuania’s parliament, will host five high-level meetings and conferences involving representatives of national parliaments from across the European Union and the European Parliament. An additional event will be held at the European Parliament in Brussels.
Lithuania’s presidency priorities will include strengthening security and defence, supporting Ukraine, EU enlargement, European competitiveness, internal security, democratic resilience and social security.
While most Council of the EU meetings take place in Brussels and Luxembourg, informal meetings and related events will be hosted across the country holding the presidency. In Lithuania, events are planned in Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda, as well as other regional centres.
Authorities expect about 30,000 delegates to attend the 350 official events scheduled in Lithuania.
The presidency will also feature an international socio-cultural program with more than 370 events planned across six continents, 52 countries and more than 100 cities. The program will include concerts, exhibitions, film retrospectives, dance performances and literary presentations as part of a cultural diplomacy initiative.
Preparations will culminate in December with the official launch of the presidency’s communications identity, including the unveiling of its logo, slogan and visual style.
The Council of the EU presidency rotates among the bloc’s member countries every six months. The country holding the presidency helps organise and chair Council meetings and works to facilitate negotiations among member states.
