Adverse weather conditions caused minor flight delays at Vilnius and Kaunas airports on Tuesday morning, airport officials said.

According to Lithuanian Airports spokesperson Vitalija Ročė, aircraft departures were delayed by several minutes to half an hour as weather conditions complicated aircraft preparation for takeoff.

“Current weather conditions at both Vilnius and Kaunas airports are having a slight impact on flight schedules due to icy surfaces, which are extending aircraft preparation times,” Ročė told BNS on Tuesday morning.

She said such weather-related disruptions typically result in short delays and only rarely lead to flight cancellations.

Publicly available schedules from Vilnius Airport show that by about 08:00, eight outbound flights were delayed, including a flight to Copenhagen that was running roughly two hours late.

At Kaunas Airport, two flights departed later than scheduled.

She added that unstable weather conditions are expected to persist throughout the day, prompting airport teams to operate in reinforced mode.

“We will continue to monitor the situation and adjust to the weather conditions,” she said.

Snow and sleet fell across much of Lithuania overnight into Tuesday, with freezing rain and icy conditions reported in many areas.

Copenhagen flight cancelled

Due to difficult weather conditions in Vilnius, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) flights from Copenhagen to Vilnius and back were cancelled on Tuesday morning, and other flights may be delayed, the Lithuanian Airports spokeswoman said.

“The flight from Copenhagen to Vilnius and the subsequent flight from Vilnius to Copenhagen have been canceled by the airline’s decision due to weather conditions in Vilnius,” Ročė told BNS.

The aircraft was supposed to land in Vilnius at 10:45 and depart back to Copenhagen at 11:20.

Moreover, other SAS flights to Copenhagen and Stockholm have been delayed.

“Decisions regarding the operation, delay, or cancellation of specific flights are made by the airlines, after the crew has assessed all the circumstances,” Ročė said.
