Authorities in western Lithuania’s Plungė District are officially declaring an extreme situation on Tuesday after record snowfall over the past several days caused widespread disruption.

Plungė District Mayor Audrius Klišonis said Monday the decision will allow the municipality to access additional funding to deal with challenges brought on by severe winter weather.

“This decision was necessary so we can use additional funds needed for extra procurement of snow removal services and other related measures,” Klišonis told the news agency ELTA on Monday evening.

According to the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service, the heaviest snowfall in recent days was recorded in western Lithuania. Particularly large amounts of snow were measured in the Plungė District, where snowfall reached up to about 50 centimetres in some areas, one of the highest levels recorded in the region in recent years.

Forecasters said weather conditions are expected to remain similar in the near term, though temperatures are forecast to drop steadily throughout the week. On Tuesday, skies are expected to remain overcast, with additional precipitation likely.

Schools across the Plunge District and the neighbouring Rietavas District decided on Sunday to swich to remote teaching for at least two days this week.

The Kretinga District municipality also announced that classes in general education schools will be held remotely on January 5 and 6.
