The interior of the Klaipėda State Music Theatre has been named a finalist in the prestigious World Architecture Festival (WAF), often referred to as the “Oscars of architecture”, organisers announced Monday.

The project, designed by Lithuanian firm MAMA architects, is shortlisted in the Public Buildings category. According to Marius Mateika, head of MAMA architects and one of the project’s authors, making it to the finals is a significant achievement given the high level of global competition this year.

“Every creator is somewhat subjective when evaluating their own work – it’s like their baby. So it’s really rewarding to see how others view and appreciate it,” Mateika said in a statement.

Mateika and his colleague Indrė Ankudavičienė were also finalists at WAF last year for their interior design of the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra Hall.

Winners of this year’s WAF awards will be announced November 12–14 in Miami, Florida.

The Klaipėda theatre’s interior has already earned several accolades, including a Gold A’Design Award, the Lithuanian national Interior of the Year / Golden Palette ’24 award, and a nomination at the National Architecture Awards.

Reopened in the spring of 2023 after renovation, the theatre is noted for its distinctive spaces and handcrafted clay decorations that define its unique character.
