The ruling Social Democratic Party (LSDP) continues to top Lithuania’s political party rankings, with the opposition conservative Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD) rising to second place, according to the latest Spinter Tyrimai opinion poll published by Delfi on Wednesday.

Only a third of a percentage point separates the two parties: 10.9 percent of respondents in the poll said in January they would vote for the LSDP, and 10.6 percent supported the TS-LKD, down from 13 percent and 12.2 percent, respectively, in the previous poll in December.

Nemunas Dawn, which is part of the ruling coalition, saw their support fall to 8.7 percent, from 12.6 percent, pushing the party to third position.

The Democrats “For Lithuania”, the smallest ruling coalition partner, ranked fourth with 8.2 percent (up from 7.8 percent in December), followed by the opposition Liberal Movement with 7.9 percent (down from 8.1 percent).

Further down the list was the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union with 6.1 percent (down from 6.5 percent), followed by the Freedom Party, which did not make it into the parliament, with 2.8 percent (up from 2.3 percent).

The National Alliance saw support increase to 2.2 percent, up from 1.7 percent in December.

Meanwhile, 9.4 percent of respondents said in January that they would vote for some other party, up from 8 percent in December. Another 12.5 percent said they would not go to the polls at all, down from 13.6 percent.

The percentage of respondents who were undecided or did not answer the question rose to 20.7 percent last month, from 15.9 percent.

When asked who they saw as best suited to be prime minister, 10.9 percent of those polled in January chose Ingrida Šimonytė, the former head of government, down from 12 percent in the previous poll.

Social Democratic Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas came in second with 8.8 percent respondents wanting to see him remain in office, down from 12.2 percent in December.

Remigijus Žemaitaitis, the Nemunas dawn leader, ranked third with 8.7 percent, down from 10.3 percent.

When asked about the current government’s performance, 27.9 percent of respondents said their opinion was positive or rather positive, and 52.9 percent said it was negative or rather negative.

In the representative survey commissioned by Delfi, Spinter Tyrimai polled 1,009 people between January 18 and 29. The results of the poll have an error margin of 3.1 percent.
