The second-to-last stretch of the Via Baltica highway between Lithuania’s southern town of Marijampolė and the Polish border is opening to traffic on Friday after year-long upgrades.

The Transport Ministry said the 16-kilometre stretch near Marijampolė “is the longest and most technically challenging part of the project”.

“We managed to complete the modernisation in just over a year,” it noted.

Work on the 16-kilometre highway stretch started in June 2023 and was carried out by Fegda Group’s companies Fegda and Tilsta under a contract worth 223.6 million euros.

The final 12-kilometre stretch, up to the Polish border, is being upgraded by Kauno Tiltai, a leading Lithuanian road and bridge construction company, under a contract worth 155 million euros. Work began this past summer.

Via Baltica is a trans-European highway that runs from Warsaw to Tallinn, spanning a total of 970km, including 269km in Lithuania.
