BNS 2024.09.16 16:06

Lithuania stands ready to send aid to Poland hit by torrential rains and floods, the Government’s Office said on Monday.

An inter-agency meeting at the National Crisis Management Center has decided to offer Poland a high-capacity container pumping station and sandbagging equipment for the construction of dams.

A team of 15–20 rescuers from the Fire and Rescue Department is also ready to go to Poland to help with rescue work.

The Foreign Ministry is also in contact with its counterparts in Poland and they are looking into the specific needs and the best way to provide assistance.

Meanwhile, the Interior Ministry is coordinating the practical steps to be taken by the services to ensure that the rescuers are able to leave as soon as possible once the details of the scale and necessity of the assistance are agreed upon with Polish institutions.

The final decision will be made soon, the statement said.

The Foreign Ministry also advises travellers to Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia to take precautions.

“It is recommended to follow the latest information in the local media, and not to visit forests and parks where trees may be uprooted. It is advisable to carry a fully charged mobile phone and to inform the rescue service by dialling 112 in case of emergency,” the ministry said.

One person drowned in Poland and four people disappeared in the Czech Republic during Storm Boris, which brought heavy rains to Central and Eastern Europe. The storm also killed four people in Romania and led to the evacuation of thousands.
