Last weekend, more than 80,000 people attended two concerts by British pop star Ed Sheeran at Kaunas Darius and Girėnas Stadium. The event, which attracted a record crowd, was not without consequences, as the stadium’s lawn was damaged.

According to the stadium’s managers, work has already started on the restoration of the lawn, which will result in the rescheduling of FC Žalgiris Kaunas’ home matches.

“While planning Ed Sheeran’s performance, we had discussions with both the agronomists maintaining the lawn at the stadium and with stadiums in Poland that have had similar experiences, in order to prepare the lawn restoration after the event in the best possible way,” Saulius Balnanosis, head of the Darius and Girėnas Stadium was quoted as saying in a press release.

In preparation for the concerts, special panels were laid over the lawn, and once they were removed, the process of revitalising the lawn began.

“At the moment, the condition of the lawn is similar to what we expected. We have an action plan for revitalising the lawn, so it was only after the protective cover was removed that the concrete work started,” Balnanosis said.

“The lawn is currently being cleaned, followed by aeration and other technical processes. We understand that visually the lawn now looks changed, but to recover it just needs a natural period of time and maintenance, which is intensively carried out every day,” he added.

Due to the lawn restoration process, the home match of FC Žalgiris Kaunas, which was scheduled for August 17, will be postponed to a later date.
