Conservative MP Žygimantas Pavilionis was on Tuesday appointed as deputy speaker of the Lithuanian parliament Seimas.

According to the sources of BNS, 74 MPs voted in favour of Pavilionis’ nomination, 32 against, and 10 abstained in a secret ballot.

The parliamentary group of the ruling conservative Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats had to nominate a new politician for this post after President Gitanas Nausėda appointed Radvilė Morkunaitė-Mikulenienė as education, science and sport minister at the end of June.

Following the appointment of Pavilionis as deputy speaker of the Seimas, a resolution on his election as chair of the Committee on European Affairs will be submitted to the MPs.

According to the Statute of the Seimas, a deputy speaker of the parliament is appointed chair of the Committee on European Affairs.

“I would like to welcome the nomination of a candidate who has an excellent knowledge of foreign and European affairs in the Seimas,” Seimas Speaker Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen told MPs.

Pavilionis is also the chair of the Seimas Committee on Foreign Affairs.

According to the Seimas Statute, MPs serving on other committees may be members of the Committee on European Affairs.

Another position of deputy Seimas speaker will become vacant when Paulius Saudargas leaves for the European Parliament.
