A strong geomagnetic storm was reported in Lithuania on Friday, illuminating the sky with Northern lights.
According to meteorologists, an extraordinary aurora borealis is visible in Lithuania tonight due to the geomagnetic storm, which is the strongest in almost 20 years.
A geomagnetic storm occurs when electrified particles from the Sun collide with the Earth’s magnetic field. Geomagnetic storms are graded from 1 to 5 in terms of strength. A category 4 geomagnetic storm is expected to hit Earth this weekend.
The last time a geomagnetic storm of this magnitude was recorded was back in 2003, Weather and Climate Lithuania posted on Facebook.
The Northern lights, also known as aurora borealis, also occur when charged particles emitted from the Sun – the solar wind – collide with oxygen and nitrogen atoms in the Earth’s atmosphere.
