Lithuania features more than 30 observation towers. Before the Easter weekend, Lithuania Travel presents a list of structures that reveal the country’s most spectacular panoramas.

Pagramantis Observation Tower

The 12-metre-high tower rises above the confluence of two rivers – Jūra and Akmena. Travellers can admire the river valley not only from above but also by wading into the converging currents. If you do so, you will feel that the water is colder in one river than the other.

Location: Pagramantis Regional Park, Tauragė District.

Birštonas Observation Tower

At 55 metres, the Birštonas observation tower is the tallest in Lithuania. Its design is reminiscent of a chapel or a bell tower, with wooden panels with windows symbolising constellations. This is the perfect place to admire the Nemunas River valley and the resort of Birštonas from above.

Location: Nemunas Loops Regional Park, Birštonas.

Mindūnai Observation Tower

The 36-metre-high tower is also one of the tallest in Lithuania. After climbing 214 steps, travellers can admire the bird’s eye view of the Siesartis Lake with its islands and peninsulas, as well as Baltieji Lakajai and Juodieji Lakajai lakes surrounded by wooded hills.

Location: Labanoras Regional Park, Molėtai District.

Dreverna Observation Tower

The seaside town of Dreverna is a former fishing village. From the 15-metre-high observation tower, travellers are treated to the view of the Curonian Lagoon and the UNESCO-protected Curonian Spit.

Location: Dreverna, Klaipėda District.

Kirkilai Observation Tower

This unique-shaped tower welcomes all those who want to see the sinkholes and the karst lakes from a height of 32 metres. Around 30 such lakes surround the tower.

Location: Biržai Regional Park, Biržai District.

Anykščiai Treetop Walking Path

The 34-metre-high observation tower is one of the most popular in Lithuania. It connects to the treetop walking path, rising 21 metres above the Anykščių Šilelis forest. From here, one can also admire the Šventoji River and the towers of St Matthew’s Church – the highest in Lithuania.

Location: Anykščiai Regional Park, Anykščiai.

Zarasai Observation Circle

The 100-metre-long structure oversees the Zarasai Lake. After descending from the 17-metre-high observation circle, you can walk or cycle along the shores of the lake and explore the stone sculpture park.

Location: Zarasai.

Merkinė Observation Tower

The 24-metre-high tower is located on the right bank of the Nemunas River. From here, you can see Pastraujas Island, the Merkinė Bridge, the town of Merkinė, and its Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary – one of the oldest in Lithuania.

Location: Dzūkija National Park, Varėna District.

Veisiejai Observation Tower

The Snaigynas Lake, with its winding shores and three islands, offers a view that makes the 15-metre-high tower worth climbing. Although it took 25 tonnes of metal to build the structure, it looks like a light and graceful whirlwind. The tower is also illuminated with colour-changing LED lights.

Location: Veisiejai Regional Park, Lazdijai District.

Meteliai Observation Tower

The observation tower rises 15 metres above the Meteliai Lake, the village of Meteliai, the meadow of Kemsinė, a narrow stretch of the Dusia Lake, and the Papėčiai Hillfort.

Location: Meteliai Regional Park, Lazdijai District.

Aukštojas Hill Observation Tower

The 294-metre-high Aukštojas Hill is the highest in the country, and the observation tower on top of it is located 300 metres above sea level. The views of the fields and forests of the Medininkai Upland make the tower worth a visit.

Location: Juozapinė Geomorphological Reserve, Vilnius District.

Jurakalnis Observation Tower

A stand at the foot of the tower provides information about the Jurassic period and the prehistoric reptiles that once lived in this very spot. From the 15-metre-high tower, visitors can see the valley of the Venta River, the Papilė hillforts, the geological outcrop of Jurakalnis, and the town of Papilė.

Location: Venta Regional Park, Akmenė District.

Vilkyškiai Observation Platform

You can see the Vilkyškiai Old Town by climbing to the 8.5-metre-high observation platform located on a hill at the southwestern edge of the town. It also offers a view of the hills of the Vilkyškiai ridge, the Karšuva forest, and the Tauragė church.

Location: Rambynas Regional Park, Pagėgiai Municipality.

And that’s just a handful of observation towers scattered across Lithuania. The full list of the country’s observation towers offering unforgettable views can be found here.
