On Thursday morning, heavy snow and wind are wreaking havoc in Lithuania.
The port of Klaipėda has restricted shipping since Wednesday evening due to heavy winds. At night, the wind speed reached 30 m/s in the Klaipėda Port area.
Meanwhile, firefighters are responding to calls to remove fallen trees from the roads, mainly in western Lithuania.
Due to the strong winds and snowstorms that hit the country during the night, 7,600 thousand consumers were without electricity on Thursday morning, including more than 5,000 in the Klaipėda region, BNS was informed by the Energy Distribution Operator (ESO).
According to the Road Directorate, the continuing snowfall has left the main national roads covered with loose snow almost all over the country, while traffic jams were forming in Kaunas and Vilnius, as well as on the Kaunas-Vilnius motorway.
On Thursday morning, four trucks and two cars were involved in an accident in the Panevėžys district, and the Panevėžys-Aristavas-Sitkūnai road was temporarily closed.
A flight from Riga to Vilnius was delayed on Thursday and a flight from Copenhagen could not land in Palanga, Tadas Vasiliauskas, a spokesperson for Lithuanian Airports, told BNS.
According to the Palanga Airport website, the SAS flight from Copenhagen landed shortly after 11:00.
Despite bad weather, there are no major disruptions, Vasiliauskas said.
“We have not had major disruptions, no major challenges since this morning, and we operate as usual,” he said.
The weather forecasters urge people to postpone unnecessary journeys on Thursday due to the difficult weather conditions.
