From July 1, shops in Lithuania will no longer be allowed to issue single-use plastic bags for free.
Starting next month, consumers in Lithuania will no longer be able to pack fresh produce and other groceries into single-use plastic bags for free. In a bid to reduce plastic waste, the country banned free plastic bags in late 2022.
On average, a person in Lithuania uses around 200 single-use plastic bags per year.
However, all major supermarket chains in Lithuania will continue offering single-use plastic bags, but at a cost of 1 to 5 euro cents. Other options, such as paper bags, will also be available.
