A number of big Lithuanian companies and state institutions came under DDoS attacks on Tuesday. Some of the cyber attacks were carried out from Russia.

Aviation business group Avia Solutions Group said on Tuesday its offices in Ireland, Lithuania, Latvia and other countries were attacked on Tuesday morning and the group’s website and those of several of its companies were affected.

The massive cyber attacks were carried out from Russia, according to Romas Butkevičius, head of the group’s technology, infrastructure and development department.

“When we were looking into the circumstances, it became clear that the attacks came from Russia. We know that other companies, mainly state-owned, have also come under such attacks,” he said.

Linas Agro, one of Lithuania’s largest agribusiness companies, was also hit by a DDoS attack, informed Vilma Mikulėnaitė, head of the company’s IT and infrastructure, adding that the attack was detected on Monday, and the company was forced to shut down access to its website that has been down for about a day.

It was the first time that the company had faced an attack of this level, she said, adding that the source of this attack and its goals are unknown.

City Service, a building maintenance group that is part of the Icor group, has also confirmed to BNS it has come under an attack, but its spokesman Paulius Ugianskis has refrained from further comments.

The BNS news agency was also hit with a DDoS attack on Tuesday morning and its systems were affected for some time.

The Lithuanian Riflemen’s Union and other major companies in the country have probable also been affected by similar attacks, the 15min.lt news website reports.

The Riflemen’s Union says it is still looking into the source of the disruptions but it does not rule out a cyber attack.

Speaking with 15min.lt, the National Cyber Security Centre confirmed on Tuesday it had received inquiries about an increase in DDoS attacks.

The destabilisation traffic during the attacks was coming from within Lithuania and other countries, including Russia.
