Lithuania’s Iron Wolf 2026 exercise has concluded, testing troop readiness, technology integration and cooperation with NATO allies as well as civilian institutions, the Lithuanian Armed Forces said on Friday.

The two-week exercise focused on integrating new technologies developed by Lithuania’s defence industry, including the deployment of more than 150 reconnaissance and attack drones in cooperation with industry representatives.

According to the military, the drills allowed forces to plan the use of drones in both offensive and defensive operations, protect logistical elements and improve piloting skills. It also underscored that camouflage and concealment from drones are as important for survival as operating them.

Representatives from a Ukrainian drone company also took part, sharing operational insights and battlefield experience.

“The integration of modern technologies into military operations is a crucial aspect,” said Infantry Brigade Commander Darius Meilūnas. “But while emphasising technology, we cannot ignore the basic elements of warfare. Drones and the latest technologies do not replace fundamentals – they enhance them and help to complete tasks, defeat the enemy faster, more efficiently, safely, and with fewer losses.”

He added that core tactical principles such as discipline, leadership, fire and movement, and engineering and medical readiness remain essential.

The exercise also involved close cooperation with civilian bodies including the State Border Guard Service, police, municipalities, hospitals and the media. It tested crisis-response procedures such as evacuation, logistics, prisoner-of-war handling and casualty management.

Held at the Gaižiūnai training area and across several Lithuanian regions, the exercise involved more than 2,700 troops and over 390 pieces of equipment, including Air Force helicopters and logistics support from Lithuanian Railways.

Alongside Lithuanian forces, the drills included NATO enhanced Forward Presence battlegroup troops, as well as personnel from Britain and Poland, the National Defence Volunteer Forces, the Riflemen’s Union, reserve units, and other institutions.
