Lithuania will help earthquake-hit Turkey by sending a team of rescue workers with supplies and will transfer 200,000 euros of aid.
“We see the tragedy in Turkey and we have to help it in this difficult hour,” Interior Minister Agnė Bilotaitė told a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
Minister later approved the Interior Ministry’s proposal to send a rescue team of around 40 people to Turkey to carry out rescue, search and other emergency work.
According to Government Chancellor Giedrė Balčytytė, this is the first time Lithuania is sending a search and rescue team to a foreign country to help with disaster relief.
Under the cabinet’s decision, material assistance worth 328,000 euros will be provided to Turkey, and it will include tents, electric heaters, bedding, blankets, medical equipment and medicines.
In addition, 100,000 euros will be transferred to the Turkish government.
Moreover, Foreign Vice Minister Jonas Survila said the Foreign Ministry would also transfer an additional 100,000 euros.
On Monday, two strong earthquakes rocked Turkey and Syria, killing 11,200 people, based on the latest figures. Rescue efforts continue to find survivors.
