The Darius and Girėnas Stadium in Kaunas, Lithuania’s second-biggest city, has been rated by UEFA as a Category 4 stadium, allowing it to host top-level international matches.

Kaunas Municipality said on Friday that the city is seeking the same rating for its athletics infrastructure.

According to the municipality, international experts “highly appreciated” the stadium’s amenities for people with disabilities, with 300 seats and 20 toilets specially equipped for them.

The stadium recently underwent a major renovation and was reopened with the 2022 Lithuanian Football Cup final last October. It hosted a match between the Lithuanian and Icelandic men’s national football teams in November.

The 15,000-seat stadium is scheduled to host official qualifying matches for the European Football Championship this year, and will be able to host UEFA club competitions in the summer.

Construction of an indoor athletics arena next to the stadium is already underway. Once completed, the new space will be suitable not only for training, but also for warm-ups during high-level competitions.
