A strike by public transport workers, which started on December 5, is due to end on Thursday, Vilnius Mayor Remigijus Šimašius has announced.
“Good news: the drivers’ strike is suspended. I thank both sides – the leaders of Vilnius Public Transport (VVT) and the trade union – for finally reaching an agreement,” Šimašius wrote on Facebook.
According to him, “the collective agreement for VVT workers, which was negotiated last Friday, will be signed today and will enter into force on January 1. Full bus timetables will return to the city as early as this evening”.
At the height of the strike, 489 drivers did not report to work. In total, VVT employs 1,830 people, over 1,100 of whom are drivers.
The industrial action took place since December 5 as drivers demanded better working conditions and higher pay.
