Lithuanian government leaders have expressed their condolences on the death of Queen Elizabeth II, also remembering her visit to Lithuania in 2006.

“I am deeply shocked to learn of the death of Queen Elizabeth II. I express my sincere condolences and those of all the people of Lithuania to You and all the people of the United Kingdom on this great loss,” reads Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda’s message of condolence.

He noted that Queen Elizabeth II was a dedicated and extraordinary leader who left a significant mark on world history.

“Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s impressive 70 years of leadership and her great devotion and love for her people will never be forgotten. Today, the whole world mourns with the United Kingdom,” the president wrote in his message of condolence.

The president assured the Royal Family that Queen Elizabeth II will be remembered in Lithuania as radiant and loving the people, as Lithuanians saw her during her visit to their country in 2006.

Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Philip visited Lithuania in mid-October 2006. The Queen met with the then Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus and gave a speech at the parliament Seimas.

“You have emerged from the shadow of the Soviet Union and flourished as independent states, taking your rightful place in the international community and becoming respected members of the European Union and NATO,” Queen Elizabeth II said at the Seimas.

“This was a political, economic and social transformation with few parallels in European history. We salute your dynamism, creativity, and commitment to the ideals of freedom and democracy, which can bring so much to your partners and the world,” she added.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis also expressed his condolences.

“While the world is facing ever more turbulence, we sorrowfully have to say farewell to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, our beacon of stability and integrity who inspired so many generations. We will miss you, Ma’am,” he wrote on Twitter.

In her message of condolence, Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė said that Queen Elizabeth II “became a true symbol of nobility and dedication to her country far beyond her realm”, as she took the throne at the age of 25 and held it for more than 70 years.

“The Queen has shown that it is not a position that gives greatness to a person, but the greatness of personality that can give extraordinary power and authority even to seemingly more symbolic titles and positions. [...]. Her Majesty’s deeds and legacy will undoubtedly be inscribed in the history of the world,” Šimonytė said.

“I send my sincere condolences to the family of Queen Elizabeth II and all the people of the United Kingdom. I also hope that the virtues and ideals she embodied will remain relevant in the new era of world history that is emerging from the current upheavals,” she added.
