Despite petition, Lithuanian president will not turn to court over Covid pass legality

Despite being presented a petition, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda will not turn to Constitutonal Court over the legality of the national Covid certificate.

Instead, his adviser Ridas Jasiulionis said the president called on the court to speed up the process surrounding an earlier court case.

In October, 36 opposition MPs turned to the court, asking it to rule whether the Opportunity Pass (Galimybių Pasas) violated the Constitution and the law.

Nausėda has asked the court to “analyse this case at a maximum pace”, according to Jasiulionis.

The president was handed a petition on Wednesday, asking him to turn to the Constitutional Court over the pass. Vita Gruodytė, one of the initiators of the petition that allegedly received some 112,000 signatures, says the certificate system would then have to be “halted automatically” until the court issues a ruling.

According to Jasiulionis, Nausėda listened to the petition's initiators, who stressed several times during the conversation that “the society’s psychological health is [also] very important, not just the physical health”.

“The president agrees with this very much,” said Jasiulionis.

The adviser added that the president may still turn to court over the decision to include children in the Covid certificate system.
