The former mayor of the city of Maymana in northwestern Afghanistan has requested asylum in Latvia, the country's defence minister has said.

The Latvian public broadcaster LSM has quoted Minister Artis Pabriks who said that Latvian soldiers had been stationed in the capital city of Faryab Province.

The Latvian government has also asked to identify people in Afghanistan who have assisted Latvian troops.

According to Pabriks, up to 15 families could be offered asylum in Latvia.

The Taliban took control of Maymana on Saturday, following a month of siege. On Sunday, the military Islamist group entered the Afghan capital Kabul.
