As coronavirus cases spike in Lithuania, most clusters ‘under control’ – official

Although there’s been a spike in the daily new cases of coronavirus, Lithuanian authorities say most clusters are under control.

Rolanda Lingienė from the National Public Health Centre said the future is worrying, as the “daily figures of infections have been rising" steadily.

On Friday, Lithuania reported 37 new cases, preceded by between 18 and 38 daily new infections over the past 10 days.

“If it was a coincidence before to have more than 20 cases per day”, the double-digit figures have now become the norm, she added.

However, the virus has not been spreading uncontrollably, according to Lingienė. Most cases are connected with existing clusters, or the new infections have been contracted abroad, she said.

As of Friday, “64 percent of all cases detected in August are connected with known clusters”, she said.

Another 14 percent are infections that had been contracted abroad, therefore, “almost 80 percent of all new cases are absolutely under control”, said Lingienė. The spread of the virus from unknown sources makes up just 20 percent of all new cases, she added.

However, the situation might change in the near future, as an increasing number of events are planned for the autumn and specialists may become overwhelmed, according to Lignienė.
