Lithuanian military to spend €300m on new helicopters

BNS2019.06.26 10:00

The Lithuanian Armed Forces plan to spend around 300 million euros on new helicopters.

The Defense Ministry has launched a procurement procedure to hire a company to prepare an investment project for the acquisition of multi-purpose helicopters, setting 300 million euros as the preliminary purchase price.

Asta Galdikaitė, the ministry's spokeswoman, told BNS that a market analysis is currently being carried out and decisions are yet to be made on how many and what aircraft are to be purchased.

Multi-purpose helicopters can be used for combat and troop transportation tasks, and for search and rescue operations.

Galdikaitė said public procurement procedures for new helicopters are planned to be launched next year.

The Lithuanian Armed Forces currently have three Russian-made Mi-8 and three French-made Dauphin helicopters, which are mainly used for search and rescue operations.

According to the investment project procurement documents, the military will seek the acquisition of new helicopters to be included into the state's 2020-2022 investment program.

This will mark one of the biggest ever acquisitions by the Lithuanian military.
