Lithuanian MP Ignas Vėgėlė announced Wednesday he was forming a new political party called Lithuania for Citizens (Piliečių Lietuva).

“The party will bring together an active and responsible public into a genuine centre-right political movement,” Vėgėlė, who currently serves in the non-attached group of members of parliament, said on Facebook.

The MP is part of the non-attached group in parliament after leaving the Farmers and Greens over policy disagreements.

Vėgėlė, a lawyer, rose to prominence during the Covid pandemic by campaigning against quarantine restrictions and mandatory vaccination.

In the post on Wednesday, he said signatures from founders are currently being collected, with a founding congress scheduled for this autumn. The party aims for success in the 2028 parliamentary elections.

Vėgėlė also ran in the 2024 presidential election, finishing third with 12.35 percent of the vote.
