Understanding air alert warnings in Lithuania – explainer

Residents in several municipalities across Lithuania received air danger alerts on Wednesday. The country’s Defence Ministry and the Fire and Rescue Department (PAGD) have published an explainer outlining the different warnings and what they mean.

A probable air danger alert (yellow) means there are currently no potentially dangerous objects within Lithuanian territory, but a threat is considered possible. Residents are urged to remain calm, identify a safe place and call 112 if they spot a suspicious flying object or debris on the ground.

An air alert (red) means that, in peacetime, an unidentified object is flying in Lithuanian airspace or there is a high probability that it will enter Lithuanian airspace and could pose a threat within the country.

Residents should immediately follow the instructions provided in the warning message: head to the nearest shelter or, if none is available, take cover in a safe room – ie, a room inside the building that is separated by at least two outer walls from the exterior. Inside residential properties, these are usually bathrooms or staircases.

More recommendations, as well as the map of all shelters in the country, of the nearest shelters, are available on the government’s emergency response website, www.LT72.lt.

An all-clear alert (white) means residents may leave shelters and safe locations, but are encouraged to remain vigilant and continue monitoring information updates.

Authorities stressed that residents receive a separate message for each type of alert, including for the all clear announcement.
