Vilnius residents advised to avoid outings as freezing rain leaves sidewalks slippery

Sidewalks in the capital remained slippery Tuesday morning after freezing rain formed overnight, the Vilniaus City Municipality said.

According to the municipality, black ice formed on sidewalks around 02:00.

“It is currently raining heavily. Contractors’ equipment was dispatched at 03:00 to spread a gravel-salt mixture on pedestrian paths. The situation is being monitored, and sand will be spread if necessary. Different surfaces become slippery in different ways during rainfall, so please be very careful,” the municipality said in a statement.

Officials warned pedestrians not to rush, even if a stretch of sidewalk appears safe.

“Even if the path in front of you looks non-slippery, do not hurry, as it is unclear what the surface conditions will be after a few steps,” the statement said.

Residents are advised to walk on sections of sidewalk where the most gravel has been spread, as traction is better there. The municipality also urged people to take smaller steps than usual, walk at a slower pace and allow extra travel time.

“If possible, avoid unnecessary trips,” the statement said.

Conditions may vary significantly between neighbourhoods and even from street to street within the same area, officials added.
