Greenland is an integral part of Denmark, the Baltic foreign ministers said after US President Donald Trump repeated his threats that the US should claim the island.
“Greenland is an integral part of the Kingdom of Denmark, which is a strong democracy and a trusted NATO ally. All arising issues are the matter of transatlantic security,” Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys said on X on Monday. “Respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty is fundamental to global stability. All decisions regarding Greenland or Denmark are only for them to make.”
Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže also said that Denmark and Greenland must themselves resolve any issues pertaining to the status of the island.
“Respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty is fundamental to global stability, and all differences must be solved in dialogue. Allies are committed to each other to preserve peace and security. It is for Denmark and Greenland to decide on matters relevant to them,” Latvia’s top diplomat said.
Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna also said that Estonia “stands in full solidarity with our Nordic-Baltic ally” Denmark.
“Greenland is an integral part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and no decisions concerning Greenland can be made without the involvement of both Greenland and Denmark,” he posted on X on Monday.
On Sunday, US President Trump repeated his earlier claims that Greenland should become part of the United States, despite calls from the Danish prime minister to stop threatening the territory.
“We need Greenland from the standpoint of national security, and Denmark is not going to be able to do it,” he said.
He claims that Greenland, which is rich in minerals vital to the technology industry, is necessary for US national security.
Greenland is an autonomous territory in the Kingdom of Denmark. It is one of the three constituent parts of the kingdom, alongside Denmark itself and the Faroe Islands.
