Vilnius, Klaipėda and several smaller Lithuanian towns lit their main Christmas trees on Saturday evening, marking the start of the holiday season.
In Vilnius, thousands gathered in Cathedral Square for a festive program featuring well-known Lithuanian performers and children’s and adult choirs.
Marking both Europe’s Christmas Capital and European Green Capital titles, this year’s decorations emphasise light displays and forest-inspired motifs, Mayor Valdas Benkunskas said in a statement.

“They symbolise what is simple, timeless and priceless – shared traditions, moments with loved ones and friendship,” he said. “As we await the most beautiful holidays of the year, we encourage residents and visitors to pause, to spread light and kindness, and to show care, love and time to those around us. The greatest Christmas miracle lies in our hearts.”

Vilnius’ main Christmas tree features a classic design. It sits atop a structure that allows visitors to walk around the installation and take photos from an elevated platform.

In Klaipėda, the tree was lit in Theatre Square during a theatrical performance titled Christmas Radio, featuring popular singers and local arts groups. Mayor Arvydas Vaitkus told LRT.lt that he planned to write a letter to Santa Claus.
“I will write to wish and ask that this city be loved by its residents and visiting guests, that everyone has a joyful Christmas and New Year, and that we always have good moods and good health. Happy holidays!” Vaitkus said.

Christmas trees were also lit Saturday in Jonava, Zarasai, Kretinga, Jurbarkas and Giraitė.
Kaunas was the first major Lithuanian city to open the season, lighting its tree last weekend in Town Hall Square.
