On Monday, September 22, residents and visitors to the capital will be able to use public transport free of charge, enjoying a special ride on a vintage Škoda 9Tr trolleybus. The retro vehicle will run on route number 4.
The initiative is part of the European Mobility Week – an international initiative culminating in World Car Free Day, marked by numerous Lithuanian cities, including the capital, on September 16 – 22.
“Every trip that is taken by public transport instead of a car means less pollution and noise. It is the foundation of a greener future for our city. We are working intensively to renew our transport fleet to make travel more comfortable and safe,” said Ignas Degutis, head of Vilnius Public Transport (VVT).
Rare but eagerly awaited return
As in previous years, all public transport will be free of charge on Car Free Day. A 1981 Škoda 9Tr trolleybus – the last of its kind still running in Lithuania – will once again take to the streets to carry passengers.

“This trolleybus is a living piece of Vilnius history and a truly unique vehicle. It not only stands alone in its kind, but also demands special skills and training to drive – at present, only three of our drivers are qualified to operate it. For passengers, that makes the journey all the more authentic,” said Degutis.
The retro trolleybus will run on route 4 (Antakalnis–Centre–Žemieji Paneriai) to a special schedule between 11:00 and 15:30. Organisers say it is a rare opportunity to connect with the city’s history and enjoy an authentic ride.
