Vilnius signs €4m contract with Zaha Hadid Architects for station area redesign

Vilnius city authorities have signed a €4m contract with a British architecture and design firm Zaha Hadid Architects to design part of the Lithuanian capital’s major Vilnius Connect redevelopment project, which includes the bus station's surrounding area, public spaces, and a public transport terminal.

The redesigned area is expected to open to residents and visitors in the second half of 2029, officials said on Friday.

Zaha Hadid Architects’ Green Connect proposal was named the winning entry in a design competition back in 2022.

Mayor Valdas Benkunskas explained that disagreements with state-owned Lithuanian Railways (LTG) over the timing of the wider Vilnius Connect scheme meant the project had been split into two phases.

The first phase will focus on the bus station and its surroundings, while the second – modernisation of the nearby railway station – will be carried out by LTG at a later stage.

“The city is signing a design contract with the architects and starting preparations for the bus station and surrounding area. The railway station upgrade, which is LTG’s responsibility, will follow once a decision is made,” Benkunskas told reporters on Friday.
